What is Mucormycosis

Mucormycosis (formerly called zygomycosis) may be a serious but rare mycosis caused by a gaggle of molds called mucormycetes. These molds live throughout the environment. Mucormycosis mainly affects people that have health problems or take medicines that lower the body’s ability to fight germs and sickness. It most ordinarily affects the sinuses or lungs after inhaling fungal spores from the air, or the skin after the fungus enters the skin through a cut, burn, or other sort of skin injury. However, it can occur in almost any a part of the body. sorts of Mucormycosis Rhinocerebral (sinus and brain) Mucormycosis is an infection within the sinuses which will spread to the brain. this type of mucormycosis is commonest in people with uncontrolled diabetes and in people that have had a kidney transplant. Pulmonary (lung) mucormycosis is that the commonest sort of mucormycosis in people with cancer and in people that have had an transplant or a somatic cell transplant.

 The infection most commonly affects the brain, but can also affect other organs such as the spleen, heart, and skin.
